Alexandra Aidonopoulou

Born in Athens, Greece, Alexandra Aidonopoulou is a versatile contralto with a deep passion for baroque music, sacred works, and oratorio. She holds an MA with honours in classical singing and vocal pedagogy from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, as well as degrees in classical piano from the National Conservatory of Athens and mathematics from the University of Athens. Alexandra studied with esteemed mentors such as  Maria Bayer and Birgid Steinberger, and since graduating in 2015, she has continued her vocal training under Carol Blaickner-Mayo.

 

Her dedication to sacred and baroque music has led her to perform in some of Vienna’s most prestigious churches, including St. Michael’s, St. Peter’s, the Imperial Court Chapel, the Schottenkirche, the Lutheran City Church, and Church Maria am Gestade, as well as in Athens at the German Church and St. Paul’s Anglican Church. Alexandra’s rich oratorio repertoire includes works such as J.S. Bach’s Matthew and John Passion, Magnificat, and Christmas Oratorio; G.F. Handel’s Messiah; W.A. Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation Mass; as well as Pergolesi’s and Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater. In addition to these, her repertoire includes a broad selection of other classical and early music masses, further showcasing her extensive experience and versatility in sacred music.

Her operatic repertoire includes roles such as Cornelia in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Bradamante in Handel’s Alcina, Orlando in Vivaldi’s Orlando Furioso, and Orfeo in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice. She has also brought to life characters such as Marcellina in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, the 3rd Lady in The Magic Flute, Frau Reich in Nicolai’s Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor, and Herodias in Strauss’ Salome.
 
Alexandra has collaborated with renowned baroque ensembles such as Pantolfis Consort, Artis Astra, and Arte Sonora, as well as prestigious vocal ensembles like the Wiener Akademie Consort and the vocal soloist ensemble Interpunkt. Her performances have taken her to time-honored venues like the Golden Hall of the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Hercules Hall in Munich, and the Auditorium Nacional in Madrid.
She has also appeared in prominent festivals such as the International Bach Tage Zürich, the Athens Baroque Festival, the Spring Organ Series in Athens, and the Laudes Organi Festival in Vienna.
 
Beyond her enthusiasm for early music, Alexandra enjoys exploring and experimenting with contemporary classical works as well as with Greek music. Recently, she has been collaborating with Greek musicians, performing Greek rebetiko and traditional music in celebrated venues such as the Metropol Theater and Porgy & Bess in Vienna.
 
Alexandra is also an experienced vocal coach, wholeheartedly devoted to sharing her expertise with students. She takes great joy in guiding singers through their artistic journeys and has a particular interest in Elemental Music Education, where she combines her knowledge with her love for teaching.
